Actor Jeremy Renner was trying to keep his sliding snowcat from hitting his cousin when he was pulled under the snow removal vehicle and crushed on New Year’s Day, according to an incident report from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
The vehicle began sliding sideways after the “Avengers” star used it to pull his cousin’s truck out of the snow, and the parking brake, which was not engaged, is said to have stopped it, according to the redacted incident report filed Friday. The document was obtained by CNN on Tuesday through a public records request.
“The Pistenbully snow thrower began to slide causing Renner to exit the vehicle without applying the emergency brake,” the report concludes.
“Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, based on our mechanical inspection, it is believed that the parking brake would prevent the Pistenbully from moving forward. When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury [his nephew]he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.
The report also notes that the brake indicator light in the cab of the vehicle was not functioning and that “mechanical problems may have played a role in this accident.”
Renner was airlifted to the hospital, where he remained for more than two weeks, had at least two surgeries and was treated in intensive care.
A 911 call log obtained by CNN said Renner was “completely crushed under a large snow cat [vehicle]’ and he had ‘extreme [difficulty] breathing.” It goes on to say that “the right side of his chest collapsed – the upper body was crushed.”
The incident began on New Year’s Day, when Renner dragged his cousin’s truck out of the actor’s driveway after it got stuck in the snow, he told investigators while he was hospitalized on Jan. 5, according to the incident report.
After successfully towing the truck out of the snow onto the street, Renner said the snowplow “started sliding sideways” and then “started rolling down the hill.” At that point, Renner told investigators that he had jumped out of the snowplow.
“Once he got off the Pistenbully, he realized it was headed straight for him [his nephew,]’ the report reads. “He was afraid the Pistenbully would strike [his nephew]so he decided to try to stop or divert the Pistenbully.
To enter the snowplow’s cab, Renner had to climb onto the moving track, the report notes. When he jumped onto the track, the report says Renner was then “immediately pulled under the left lane”.
“The Pistenbully rolled over him and continued on his way,” the report says. “He lay down on the floor, concentrating on his breathing [his nephew and others] helped him until medical personnel arrived.”
Renner, who plays superhero archer Hawkeye in the Marvel movie and TV “Universe,” says he broke more than 30 bones in the incident.
He posted a photo to Instagram last week with a caption that read, “Morning workouts, New Year’s resolutions have all changed this particular New Year…. Born from a tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused on reuniting useful love ❤️ I want to THANK EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness to my family and me…. Much love and appreciation to you all. These 30+ broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just as the love and bond with family and friends deepens. Love and blessings to you all.”
Impairment was not believed to be a factor in the incident, the report concludes.
CNN has reached out to Renner’s representatives for comment.
