Johnson Smith & Co

This catalog company was founded in Australia in 1906, under the name A J Smith & Company. It moved from Sidney to Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1914, and the name was changed to Johnson Smith & Company. In 1923 it moved to Racine, Wisconsin where it remained until 1936 when it moved to Detroit.

The catalogs initially offered a variety of household and medicinal items along with general novelties. Over time these offerings evolved as the company focused more on novelties; offering magic tricks, puzzles, jokes, books of all kinds, and much more. In 1932 it offered its largest catalog – 768 pages!

The company is still in business today, located in Bradenton, Florida. Under the umbrella name “The Johnson Smith Company” it has catalogs with the names Things You Never Knew Existed, Betty’s Attic, Clever Gear, Full of Life, and
